In 2018, there were 19.5 million children living in the U.S. without a father. That’s 1 in every 4 children. These children are being raised by an estimated 15.6 million single moms. If fatherlessness were a disease, this would be considered an epidemic.
But this book isn’t about statistics.
This book is about the women behind the scenes, raising children on their own, usually with no help from family or friends. Many of these women have experienced physical or verbal abuse, mental trauma as a result of their upbringing or relationship with the father, and have been left alone to take care of these fatherless children.
These women have courageously picked themselves up by their bootstraps, and with little to no time to mourn the devastation of a break-up or divorce, had to figure out how to get back on their feet.
While society has shunned single moms, or “unwed moms”, as the church groups like to call us, we have been told that churches will burn down if we step inside them. We have been bullied by the fathers of our children. We have been dragged through the court system again and again. We have been called sluts, gold diggers, and worthless. We have been told that we keep our kids away from the father, and we tend to never share our side of the story. We have been questioned on whether the child really belonged to the father, like we live in a Jerry Springer episode.
Many of us have kept our mouths shut for fear of reciprocation by the father, and focused more on our growth than trying to defend ourselves.
Often, the accusations against us are unfounded. We’ve carried the burden of blame for years, to try and keep the peace and maintain what little bit of sanity we have left.
These women aren’t showing up in this book to complain. Instead, these are the stories of 25-30 women who went through hell and back, and came out the other side stronger and more independent and healthy than ever.
These are real stories, although at times it sounds like it could be a movie scene. We know, we get it. We’re also slightly embarrassed by the amount of drama that has ensued for having a child with a man that clearly we shouldn’t have been involved with in the first place. But, hindsight is 20/20, of course.
We hope these stories will leave you with inspiration, some laughs, some cries, and most of all a newfound look into behind the scenes of the undiagnosed epidemic that is fatherlessness.
