When Transportation Isn’t a Given
Growing up in a single parent household, having a reliable car was never guaranteed. I watched my mother do everything she could to provide for our family while facing constant barriers created by the lack of transportation. Employment opportunities were limited. Daily needs required extra planning and sacrifice. Living in a rural area meant public transportation was not an option, and missing the school bus often meant missing school altogether.
When my mother was able to secure a vehicle, it rarely lasted. Monthly payments, unexpected repairs, and financial strain often led to repossession. Even at a young age, I understood that transportation was not a convenience. It was a lifeline.
That understanding stayed with me.
Starting Over After an Abusive Marriage
Years later, I found myself starting over as a single parent after leaving an abusive marriage. I walked away with little more than clothes, diapers, my daughters, and faith that there had to be another way forward.
This time, I had one critical advantage I did not have growing up. I had a car.
That vehicle allowed me to work multiple jobs, enroll in college, and get my daughters safely to school and daycare. It gave me the independence to rebuild my life without relying on anyone else. Without it, I honestly do not know how I would have escaped poverty or created stability for my family.
Why Driving Single Parents Exists
Driving Single Parents was born from lived experience, not theory. I know firsthand that for a single parent starting over, buying a car is often not an option. Damaged credit, limited savings, high interest rates, and the absence of a second income or co signer can make reliable transportation feel impossible.
When a parent has a car, everything changes. Work becomes sustainable. Education becomes accessible. Children experience consistency, routine, and security. A family can finally breathe.
As the Founder of Driving Single Parents Inc., my goal is simple. To provide that turning point for other families who just need the right tool to move forward.

Our History
Driving Single Parents Inc. was awarded 501(c)(3) nonprofit status by the IRS in 2017 with a clear mission: to remove transportation barriers so single parent families can regain stability and move forward with confidence.
Since our founding, we have helped single parents across our community take meaningful steps toward long term independence. Our recipients have gone on to graduate from college, earn promotions, secure stable employment, and give back through their own acts of community service. Reliable transportation does not just change a moment. It changes the trajectory of an entire household.
We believe single parents deserve more than temporary relief. They deserve practical solutions that create lasting opportunity for themselves and their children. By providing vehicles at no cost, we offer a hand up, not a handout, restoring access to work, education, healthcare, and family life.

Our Team
Driving Single Parents is led by a dedicated team of volunteer community leaders who believe in practical solutions that create lasting impact. Our team is made up entirely of volunteers, allowing us to keep overhead low and direct resources where they matter most: serving single parent families.
Each member of our team has been personally touched by single parenthood. Some were once single parents, some are currently navigating single parenthood, and others were raised in single parent households. This shared understanding brings empathy, insight, and care to every decision we make.
Our leadership also includes former vehicle recipients whose firsthand experience helps guide a thoughtful and respectful support process. Their perspective ensures that the families we serve are met with dignity and understanding throughout every step.
Because we operate without paid staff, our organization remains lean, mission focused, and community driven. Every hour donated and every resource contributed helps expand our reach and deepen our impact.
